Creative Ways To Fight Human Trafficking
The idea of tackling such a big issue can be a super overwhelming thought.
Every day, there are law enforcement officials, lawyers, government agencies, and so many others who are focusing all of their efforts on combatting the issue that is human trafficking. If you don’t fall into any of these categories, it is really easy to fall into the lie that you can’t help.
One of the most common questions we get here at SAS is “how can I help?” So today, we wanted to give you a few outside-the-box ideas to help bring an end to human trafficking!
Even in everyday activities like shopping, you can make a big impact. Knowing about the companies you buy from and where they source their inventory from is so important. When you are not an intentional and informed shopper, you could be unintentionally supporting a company that does not hold their suppliers to proper legal or ethical standards. So be informed. Do your research.
There are also some incredible companies that work for a greater good!
Thistle Farms is a company that we have worked with a lot in the past, we are so thankful for them and the work they do. Thistle Farms helps to heal, empower, and employ women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. They do this by providing safe and supportive housing, the opportunity for economic independence, and a strong community of advocates and partners. Their products are absolutely incredible, and you can buy them knowing that you are truly making a difference.
You can check out all of their products here.
Read a Book
Part of being the solution is understanding the problem. There are so many powerful books that expose sex trafficking.
Exposing the Darkness is one of our favorite books on the topic here at SAS. Malynda, the author, shares the pain and trauma of years of sexual exploitation in a small town where nobody ever spoke up. She she also brings the reader into her healing process.
Our friends over at Dressember have started an incredible movement that allows women to fight trafficking, simply by wearing a dress. Dressember is a collaborative movement leveraging fashion and creativity to restore dignity to all women. Dressember uses fashion to advocate for women who’ve been exploited. Women take on the creative challenge of wearing a dress for the 31 days of December, and just in December of 2016, they raised just under $1.5 Million!
